Here at Good Seed we love seasonal flowers. Like a lot. There's just something about the freshness, the unparalleled beauty and loveliness of a flower in season that's hard to get from that same flower in a time when it's out of season.
I feel like I have to start out by saying that by no means do Taylor and I only use in season, local flowers. At times, it's hard for us to be strict about those things. Sometimes a certain flower will hold emotional significance for a client, which is always the most important thing to us, sometimes it's the dead of winter and we can't even get roses unless we order out of the country. We're definitely not saying that we will refuse to get any other flowers besides in season ones. This is just an explanation of why we love flowers that are in season more than all the others and why we love to use them whenever possible.
Let's talk about this bouquet.
This is a stunner of a bouquet guys. For those who like color, those coral charm peonies are AMAZING! The spirea, the berry ranunculus, the maiden hair fern...all at their best in the spring. We have ordered these things out of season, gotten them shipped over and let me tell you, they did not look like this.
That's reason #1 why we love in season flowers.
They are always at their best! If you want a peony in February (which we did just this year) they are so sad compared to these, The ones we got shipped in were literally the size of a quarter when closed and barely bigger when open. The Coral Charms we get from a local peony farm outside of Salem are the hugest, most beautiful things ever! And that's how it is with most flowers. They are at their best when they naturally grow.
When we first started Good Seed, the majority of our flowers were from a small farm outside of Springfield called Sparhawk. We would get up early on Friday mornings, get our bucket and clippers and go out in the fields there to pick all of the flowers and greenery we were going to use for a wedding. Doing this gave us the biggest appreciation for the people who grown flowers. Flower farms are some of the most special, magical places and we love supporting them! These people are passionate about nature and growing the best, most beautiful product available. They need florists to order from them locally!
So reason #2 why we love in season flowers? It allows us to support these wonderful people! And it also gives us an excuse to visit places where our hearts are truly at peace.
(Ps- we are going to do a feature on all of our favorite local farms soon, so stay tuned for that! )
The colors, the smells, the textures. There is a reason why so many people's favorite season is autumn. I mean, just look at these pictures! When we were planning this shoot we knew we had to create something that would perfectly reflect the environment that it would take place in. So we foraged foliage from around the forests in our area and came up with something perfect for autumn in Oregon. Because it WAS autumn in Oregon.
Reason #3 why we love seasonal flowers: They perfectly represent the environment they are in.
Nature knows how to dress itself in all seasons and flowers are no exception. Just like with this shoot, flowers that look like they could have grown out of the environment they are in are always the most lovely and visually pleasing!
Those are our top three reasons why we love seasonal and local flowers. They are truly magical!
Before I end, I want to say one more thing about the seasonal nature of flowers. Just like the seasonal nature of things like Christmas and birthdays, there is something special about the fact that they only come once a year. Patience isn't something that comes naturally these days. Not when everything we want can be obtained at the drop of a hat.
But there is something about having to wait for the right time to do something or have something that makes it better. More sweet, more exciting.
Just like we wouldn't want christmas to be everyday because it would take away that special-ness, maybe we shouldn't demand everything we want whenever we want it. It has made life so convenient, this instant gratification, but maybe it has taken away some wonder and appreciation for the rhythms of nature.
We want our designs to be a reflection of this rhythm. We want to keep the "specialness" of certain flowers when they are at their best. We want to try harder at this, ordering from local growers (and if not local, at least seasonal flowers!), being aware of our mark as florists. We haven't been so good at this in the past, but we want to get better.
Thank you to all of our local growers and growers across the country who work so hard everyday to bring beauty into the world. We appreciate you! And want to be you. ;)
This bouquet was entirely from local, seasonal blooms and greenery! The PNW is truly amazing.
